The Mideast Peace Coalition of Western Massachusetts
The Middle East Peace Coalition of Western Mass. (MEPC) is a locally based educational and political organization that supports the struggle for peace and justice in Israel/Palestine. We began in 1987, inspired by the liberating potential of the Palestinian uprising (intifada). We sponsored many speakers who brought fresh perspectives that challenged then prevalent views of the history and contemporary situation in Palestine/Israel. One of our principal activities was support work and fundraising for the Union Of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees and for a pathbreaking women's health clinic founded and directed by Palestinian physician Dr. Salwah Najab-Khatib. In the late 1990s we went into dormancy but were reactivated by the Second Intifada in the fall of 2000. Since then we have organized many community programs bringing news and analysis of the current developments. A number of our members have visited Israel/Palestine as international volunteers or as members of peace delegations. Two years ago, MEPC affiliated with the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation. One of our current projects is to organize a local contingent to join the actions in June sponsored by the US Campaign and United for Peace and Justice (see below).
