Muay Thai phenomenon Johan Ghazali missed out on a $50,000 performance bonus after failing to make weight in his most recent fight, but he was still thrilled with his victory. Ghazali made his ONE Championship main show debut on December 8 at ONE Fight Night 17 in Thailand with a catchweight bout at 141 pounds, as he failed to meet the flyweight limit. Despite this setback, the 17-year-old Malaysian-American fighter scored a lightning-quick knockout of Mexican opponent Edgar Tabares in just 36 seconds.
The win, Ghazali’s fifth straight victory this year, continued his impressive ascent in the ONE Championship. He made his ONE debut in February, stopping Thai fighter Padetsuk Fairtex in 16 seconds. He followed it up with a knockout victory over Tai Sor Jor Piek Uthai in May, and added two more wins in July and October on the promotion’s weekly Friday Fights series, leading to a $100,000 contract with ONE.
Ghazali’s dominance in the flyweight division has generated anticipation for a potential title showdown with the division’s longtime king, Rodtang Jitmuangnon. His full replay of ONE Fight Night 17 is available for free on demand for existing Prime Video subscribers in North America.
