Backing Rohit Sharma as Captain for the T20 World Cup

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has backed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to feature in the 2024 T20 World Cup, to be held in the West Indies and the United States from June 4 to 30. He suggested that Rohit should be selected as captain for the ICC event and not just as a batter. Both players have not participated in any T20 cricket for India since the Men in Blue’s 2022 T20 World Cup semi-finals loss to England. Gambhir emphasized that Rohit and Kohli must not only play the T20 World Cup but that Rohit should also lead the team. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram also supported Gambhir’s view, stating that both senior players would be key members and that the team cannot rely solely on youngsters. Kohli and Rohit are the top two leading run-getters in T20Is, with Kohli accumulating 4008 runs from 115 matches and Rohit gathering 3853 runs from 148 games.
