The fifth match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023 saw the Sydney Sixers emerge victorious by six wickets against the Hobart Hurricanes. The win puts the Sixers at the top of the points table with four points and a net run rate of +0.433, while the Brisbane Heat holds the second spot with three points. The Melbourne Renegades, Adelaide Strikers, and Perth Scorchers follow with one point each, and the Sydney Thunder are yet to play a game.
In the match, Caleb Jewell made a strong start for the Hurricanes, scoring 42 off 24 balls before the team suffered a middle-order collapse, ending with a total of 135 runs. The Sixers’ Tom Curran, Jack Edwards, and Ben Dwarshuis performed well with the ball, taking three and two wickets each, respectively.
In their chase, the Sixers lost both openers early but managed to build a solid partnership between Daniel Hughes and skipper Moises Henriques. Despite a strong performance from the Hurricanes’ bowlers, Hughes’ unbeaten 60* off 50 balls guided the Sixers to victory.
The Hobart Hurricanes sit at the bottom of the points table after their defeat, and will look to bounce back in their next fixture.
