After defeating Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294, Islam Makhachev has revealed his plans for the future. Speaking at the IBA Champions’ Night event, Makhachev expressed little interest in rematches, instead focusing on a potential title defense against Justin Gaethje. Makhachev also mentioned his goal of claiming the welterweight title regardless of the opponent. When asked about his ideal fight, Makhachev emphasized his desire to win and defend both belts. He also mentioned that he plans to compete for only a few more years before retiring. The UFC welterweight belt that Makhachev covets will be up for grabs in the UFC 296 main event, with champion Leon Edwards defending the title against Colby Covington.
